The main types of roller bearings are rolling bearings and sliding bearings.
The main rolling bearings used on rollers are double row spherical roller bearings, four row tapered roller bearings, and multi row cylindrical roller bearings. Needle roller bearings are only used for work rolls in individual cases. Due to the high rigidity and low friction coefficient of rolling bearings, but with large overall dimensions, they are mostly used in various strip mills and continuous steel rolling mills.
There are two types of sliding bearings: semi dry friction and liquid friction. Semidry friction sliding bearings are mainly open type phenolic resin coated bearings (laminated bakelite bearings), which are widely used in various section steel mills, billet mills, and blooming mills. Copper or nylon bearings are also used on some small rolling mills. The laminated thin plate mill uses copper pad bearings, but due to the high roller temperature, it is used as a lubricant for bearings.
Liquid friction bearings have three structural forms: dynamic pressure, static pressure, and static dynamic pressure. Their characteristics are: low friction coefficient, high working speed, and good rigidity. A rolling mill using this bearing can produce high-precision rolled pieces. It is widely used in modern cold and hot strip continuous rolling mill support rollers and other high-speed rolling mills.
